Ferry Boarding Assistance: What to Confirm Before You Travel

1 November 2026

Ask practical questions about access, steps, seating, mobility aids and assistance so that your chosen sailing fits the traveller, not just the itinerary.

Age alone does not tell an operator what help a traveller needs. Describe the practical parts of the journey that may be difficult: walking a long distance, standing in a queue, climbing steps, crossing a gap or moving from a wheelchair into a seat. Specific questions help you find out whether the actual service is suitable before committing to a ticket.

Ask about the complete access chain

Consider the journey from the vehicle drop-off to the check-in point, from the waiting area onto the vessel, and from the arrival vessel to onward transport. Ask about surfaces, steps, ramps, handrails and distances at both ends. Do not assume that an accessible waiting area means the vessel itself has step-free boarding. Equally, a photograph of a ramp does not confirm the same arrangement on your date.

Describe mobility equipment accurately

If travelling with a wheelchair or other aid, provide the operator with the information it requests, such as dimensions, weight, whether it folds and whether it has a battery. Ask whether the traveller can remain in the chair or must transfer into another seat, and who can assist with that transfer. Do not rely on improvised lifting at the pier. If the operator cannot confirm a suitable arrangement, consider another service or a different itinerary.

Confirm the assistance rather than assuming it

Ask who provides help, where you meet them, how early you should report and whether any charge or prior arrangement applies. Request written confirmation tied to the sailing and date. A note in the booking's special-request field is not proof that the operator has accepted the request. Keep a contact for checking that the arrangement is still in place before departure.

Think about comfort during the crossing

Ask about the route to the seat, toilet access, shelter and where essential personal items can remain within reach. Discuss any medical suitability questions with an appropriate healthcare professional; this guide cannot assess whether a particular passenger should travel. Keep necessary personal supplies accessible and confirm any handling restrictions directly with the operator.

  • Exact departure and arrival access arrangements.
  • What the traveller can manage independently and where help is needed.
  • Acceptance and storage of mobility equipment.
  • Named contact or department responsible for assistance.
  • A written plan if the vessel or boarding point changes.

Check onward transport too

Tell the hotel or transfer provider about the same practical needs. Ask whether the vehicle can reach the accommodation entrance and what happens after drop-off. Boat assistance does not automatically include help in a separately booked taxi or at the hotel. Keep the itinerary flexible enough that someone is not forced to rush between providers.

Frequently asked questions

Are all ferries easier to board than speedboats?

Do not choose from the label alone. The actual vessel, pier and conditions determine the arrangement, so ask about the service you will use.

Is a special request in my booking sufficient?

No. Obtain explicit confirmation from the responsible provider. Use the help page for questions before booking, and review the baggage policy without treating ordinary luggage rules as approval for a mobility aid.
